Chapter 1 - An Unwanted Return (1)

I was the ultimate necromancer. The one who controls death which everyone fears. The ruler of the dead, filled with bloodlust for the living. I was the only human being who was respected and feared by such necromancers. I was summoned by force, and I arrived at the death planet, Hela. I lived here, refusing to return to Earth. This is a world where I can relieve the urge to kill that I felt on Earth. This was the only place where I could live since I awoke as a necromancer. And then, one day.

"My Lord, your brother, who had returned a long time ago, has died," One of my servants told me.

I now have a reason to go to Earth.

 ***

Kang Hyuk couldn't remember when he was summoned. On the other hand, he remembered the day when his younger brother Kang Min returned to Earth. The last thing he said to Kang Hyuk was, "Let's go together."

Kang Hyuk had turned away from his younger brother's gaze at the gate of return. Kang Min smiled as though he understood his brother who did not answer. That’s how his brother had always been. Whether it was when he was summoned to Hela or from the time he lived on earth as a normal person.

Hela was a world where killing, war, violence and murder continue. It was a planet where blood and battles filled the place, as if it were attached to a part of hell. Kang Hyuk moved as if he already knew what he had to do here and was able to survive this place with his younger brother. The instinct to kill and his survival instincts caused Kang Hyuk to move, and each time he did something, he gained new experiences and became stronger. One day, as Kang Hyuk avoided the moment of death that came like the wind, he heard an unfamiliar voice for the first time in Hela.

<The paradise of death will be your resting place.>

It was an incomprehensible voice, so Kang Hyuk forgot all about it. He was always clear about seperating what he needed from what he didn't need. Otherwise, he would not have been able to survive in Hela. After hearing the strange voice, Kang Hyuk awoke as a necromancer and thought, ‘Was it because there were so many moments I encountered death?’

Kang Hyuk did not know the reason for what was happening, but he was satisfied because he liked being able to freely use the power of the things he had killed. The stronger the enemies who attacked him, the more Kang Hyuk's subordinates increased. The enemies he encountered in Hela were human beings, but they had completely different abilities. It had been ten years of survival from their enemies with transcendental powers. Kang Hyuk found a gate that could move them dimensionally, for his younger brother who wanted to go back to Earth.

Kang Hyuk said to his brother, "That's all I can do for you. The rest is up to you.”

It had been six years since Kang Hyuk’s brother returned home. He, who was left alone on the death planet Hela, was filled with boredom. It was a world of similar size and environment to Earth, but it was a world of constant slaughter and war. Over there, Kang Hyuk was the ultimate necromancer who could no longer get any stronger and could not find any enemies.

***

The Demonic Palace of Hela, where the king of necromancers, the ruler of death, resides. A lone skeleton sat on the throne, armed with bone armor, as it stared into the air. There was also a shadow in front of the throne. The shadow swirled from the floor and slowly rose vertically, a person appeared in the air and took a form. This was Desmond Rodrich, the strongest summoner who followed Kang Hyuk and also his right-hand man. He was a skeleton covered with a black robe, with a staff in one hand. At the end of the staff, there was a bone finger with a transparent brain gripped in it.

"My lord, I have something urgent to tell you," Desmond said. The gloomy voice of Desmond rang out within the palace. A skeleton wriggled over the throne as the hollow eyes of the skeleton spread red and its loose jawbone moved up and down.

"Speak," Kang Hyuk calmly said.

Desmond lowered himself and replied to the skeleton, "Your brother, who returned to Earth, has died."

There was an unknown silence.

Crack. The sound of the bones breaking could be heard. Pieces of the bone armor were scattered, and then it exploded. Along with the explosion, a black light suddenly burst out. The light disappeared and Kang Hyuk appeared. Desmond placed his boney hands together and paid his respects toward Kang Hyuk.

"While walking over the shadow of death, I pay my respects to the king of Hela, who controls the Gargoa Demonic Palace."

"Be more specific," Kang Hyuk commanded as he sat on the throne and rested his chin on his hand.

"I was monitoring the soul of your brother, who had returned to Earth, as you had commanded me a long time ago," Desmond replied.

Desmond was a spirit of death sealed in the ancient temple of Hela. After he was released from the seal, Kang Hyuk signed a summon contract with the power of a necromancer and made him his right-hand man. Desmond, who had been sealed for 4,000 years, served Kang Hyuk, who had released him from his seal, as his master. He had the ability to sense the soul of life in all dimensions and Kang Hyuk ordered him to watch over the soul of his brother, who returned to Earth with his power, so that if Kang Min was in danger, Desmond would detect it and inform Kang Hyuk.

"I have just confirmed that your brother's soul has been cut off from the earth," Desmond reported.

"Show me the evidence," Kang Hyuk demanded and Desmond put the staff that he was holding on the floor. The bone fingers that gripped the transparent brain wriggled and wrung the brain lightly.

Whoosh-

The brain shook while beaming with light. Kang Hyuk looked at that light and saw his younger brother. Kang Min looked the same as the last time Kang Hyuk saw him before he returned home. His younger brother's eyes met Kang Hyuk's eyes, the whites of Kang Hyuk's eyes were grayish. He mumbled in a low voice to himself, <All memories will come back to those who look at the eyes of death.>

Kang Hyuk, who transcended the state of a necromancer, reigned as the ruler of death. His abilities were already at the strongest level and his diverse abilities were simplified to a handful. The ability he just used on his younger brother was the "gaze of death." When he looks at the dead, he could see the recent memories of the time when they were alive as if he was looking at them in front of his eyes. The memory of his younger brother, Kang Min, who died began to flow like a video. The brief moments Kang Min experienced ahead of his death were seen in Kang Hyuk's eyes. At the same time, Kang Hyuk also heard the voices Kang Min heard.

<Phew, I finally killed him.>

<Even the world's strongest returner can't beat us alone.>

<As expected. If you can't figure out the situation you’re in then even if you're strong, you'll die a terrible death all alone.>

<Now that we have killed Kang Min, our era will begin.>

They were unfamiliar voices and faces, the humans were seen in the eyes of his dying younger brother. They must have been the metahumans on Earth, or had been summoned somewhere else like Kang Hyuk and Kang Min, and returned to Earth. Whenever Kang Hyuk heard their voices, he felt an itch in his heart. The itch that was relieved every time someone was killed after they were summoned to the death planet, Hela. Kang Hyuk felt relieved every time he killed someone. Kang Hyuk memorized the faces and voices of the humans who killed his younger brother. He wanted to know why his brother, who survived the battlefield of Hela, a much more terrible planet than Earth, had died.

"After your brother returned, we measured the souls of men on Earth. The result of that, is that your brother was the only one who possessed the strongest power on Earth," Desmond answered. Desmond had the ability to measure other's souls and know of their powers.

"However, there were quite a few people who were not as strong as your brother, but had the power that was close enough..."

"We’re heading to Earth," Kang Hyuk said as he got up, Desmond followed and stood up as well, Kang Hyuk then continued, "Tell this to the rest of the five nobles. I'm going to Earth, so respond when I call for them."

Five nobles was a name for the five summoners who followed Kang Hyuk. Kang Hyuk had identified other summoners after Desmond, who was the first to be released from his seal. Monsters who dominated the dark ages of ancient Hela and created their own history. It was only after he owned them, who were able to make even Hela's infamous murderous demons tremble, that he was able to enter the Hela's demonic palace, Gargoa.

Kang Hyuk gave titles to five summoners and classified them. Desmond, who was the first to unseal, was a duke.

"I, Desmond Rodrich, will obey your orders, my Lord," Desmond replied.

Kang Hyuk cast his eyes on Desmond and commanded, "Desmond, you will stay here and protect the palace. I’m sure that while I'm away, there will be people after this place."

"My lord, it's dangerous to move alone," Desmond cautioned.

"I'll call for help if I have to. But I can't take all of you. You know what I mean, don't you?" Kang Hyuk told Desmond.

"Of course, my lord, I will obey your orders," Desmond replied subserviently.

The Earth's metahumans that Kang Hyuk saw before he was summoned were nothing more than prey as compared to Hela's enemies. The world of death that overflowed with transcendental powers. Hela still had the power to summon those who have terrible powers that were on another level. If it was made known that the throne had been vacated, others would gather forces to invade Hela.

The Five Nobles of death guarded the Gargoa Palace, because Kang Hyuk had them all under his command, the number of strong people challenging him rapidly decreased. Kang Hyuk became bored and his desire for killing grew with the decrease of new strong people appearing. Kang Hyuk was excited to meet the humans responsible for his brother's death.

Beneath the Hela Demonic Palace, an old altar appeared in front of Kang Hyuk, who followed behind Desmond. It was the place where the portal that his brother used to return to Earth was opened. Kang Hyuk climbed onto the altar and said, "Let's get this started."

Desmond triggered a magic circle carved on the floor of the altar. Light was drawn along the magic circle, the air in front of Kang Hyuk's eyes was distorted and light flowed out. Light twisted the space in the air, and a gate of dimension appeared. This gate was being used for the first time after his brother used it to return to Earth. The passage from Hela to Earth was only in the Gargoa Palace. Kang Hyuk fought a war to occupy the Gargoa Demonic Palace for the sake of his brother, and as a result, he became king of the Necromancers. The portal began to open and he remembered what his brother said, "Brother, can you still not feel any emotions?"

"What emotion?" Kang Hyuk replied.

"You won't see me again when I go back to earth, unless you come to Earth,” Kang Min responded.

"I know. Goodbye," Kang Hyuk acknowledged.

What Kang Hyuk saw reminded him of his younger brother's expression as he left the light of the portal. Even before they were summoned, Kang Min knew that Kang Hyuk didn't feel as much emotions as ordinary people, but he never grumbled and followed Kang Hyuk still. Kang Hyuk didn't understand emotions such as sadness and love. His younger brother, who found out that Kang Hyuk felt a desire to kill, tried to help Kang Hyuk adapt to society somehow. His younger brother taught Kang Hyuk to feel and sympathize with others in his own way. Both on earth and on Hela, Kang Hyuk pretended to feel and empathize with others after he saw his brother's efforts.

"I don't care if you don't feel anything, I was always happy because I was with you," Kang Min told Kang Hyuk.

Maybe Kang Min felt bad about leaving his only relative who would be in a totally different dimension. Even after the portal was completely opened, Kang Min took a moment to look at Kang Hyuk but he knew that there would be no emotions in Kang Hyuk's eyes, he then said with a smile, "I hope you’ll feel comfortable living on Earth someday."

Kang Hyuk didn't understand what his brother said and thought, ‘Earth is comfortable?’

Neither at school nor at work, had Kang Hyuk ever felt comfortable with people. The more people there were, the more itchy he felt. Whenever he smelled the breath of life in front of him, he wanted to cut it off at once. To solve this problem, he went to the fish market and learned to filet raw fish. Every time he put a knife into the belly of a live fish and felt it wriggle in his hands, the itch disappeared. When he scratched its intestines, he felt as if the itch in his heart was relieved.

The light of the portal spread before Kang Hyuk's eyes and the light went into his emotionless gaze right away. He remembered the memories of his younger brother, he could hear the voices of the people who killed him. The moment when the old altar place appeared, Desmond told Kang Hyuk, "My lord, the gate to earth has opened."
