Shin Chae-ho, an independence activist and a genius historian, said:
"If I were to choose the greatest figure in the history of Korea's 4,000 years, it would undoubtedly be Yeon Gaesomun. He is the only person in Korean history who tried to put the Chinese continent under his feet."
With its long history, China has had numerous wars and various plays about those wars. The most common ones were about 'Zhang Fei' from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, 'Yue Fei,' who repelled the Jin invasion during the Southern Song Dynasty, and 'Xue Rengui,' who destroyed Goguryeo. 'Yeon Gaesomun' appeared in those plays just as frequently as 'Xue Rengui.'
When 'Yeon Gaesomun' appeared in plays, he emerged with an air of terror, armed with five weapons and accompanied by thick smoke. Even after Goguryeo's collapse following the Goguryeo-Tang War, Yeon Gaesomun's name remained infamous in China's
Yaodong region for over a thousand years. It demonstrated how much China feared him.
