Born as the son of an enslaved person in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1820, Ferguson was sold to Dominic Wilkins, a newspaper president, and trader. In fact, Wilkins had no idea Ferguson was blind when he bought him at the slave market.
Wilkins discovered this fact belatedly and was furious at being deceived by a slave merchant, so he considered killing Ferguson.
However, Ferguson was only four years old, so he tried to calm his anger by being aware of his surroundings. Wilkins treated Ferguson coldly because he considered him a nuisance, but one day, he discovered that the slave child he bought had unique abilities.
Wilkins had a daughter, and at the time, she was receiving a private piano lesson at home, and Ferguson got caught secretly listening to the lesson.
