Some animated characters have enormous eyes that take up two-thirds of their faces, but it would be strange if a person had eyes like that.
Yet even when we see these characters, they’re visually more appealing than weird.
Conversely, we feel strange or unpleasant when we see well-made 3D images or dolls whose resemblance to humanity is almost, but not quite, real.
In psychology, this phenomenon is explained by the term uncanny valley.
It’s the emotion we feel when we see non-human beings.
The more they resemble humans, the more the appeal, but beyond a certain level, when they reach a point where there is no difference, it becomes unsettling.
This unpleasant uncanny valley also applied to the skinsuit.
No matter how well-made a skinsuit was, it couldn’t be perfectly identical to a human, so they felt something was strange.
However, there was no such feeling with the skinsuits made by Heo Zhong.
'I thought I wouldn’t be able to breathe, but it's comfortable.'
